Intersection Injury Accidents are Increasing across Kentucky

Intersection injury accidents are increasing across Kentucky, and here in Shepherdsville and Bullitt County.  Recent statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted more than 35% of car accidents resulting in injury to a driver or their passenger(s) happen in an intersection.  Intersection accidents are usually based on the fault and poor decisions of one or more of the drivers involved in the accident itself.  These can be complicated cases requiring the advice and counsel of an experienced personal injury attorney.

The report noted “inadequate surveillance” as the most common reason for these intersection injury accidents.  What is “inadequate surveillance?”  This term describes the failure of the driver(s) to be cautious and take the time and focus to observe the existing traffic flows as they approach the intersection.  Inadequate surveillance was cited as the primary reason for almost half of intersection-related accidents.

Distractions, such as texting, using a map app, or talking on a cell phone, contributed to another 10% of those accidents.  The same percentage was true for those who sped up to get through a yellow light, ran a red light, made a turn on yellow before the intersection was clear, or speeding in general.

Drivers often make decisions based on an assumption about what another driver is going to do.  Here in Kentucky, we expect other drivers we share our roads with to yield the right of way, obey our traffic laws, and observe and follow intersection traffic lights.  Many intersection injury accidents result from a wrong assumption or the failure to communicate intentions through a turn signal.
